Maruti Suzuki India reported its fifth straight monthly sales fall even as major companies like Tata Motors, Toyota Kirloskar Motors and Ford India also fell on the sales charts in May. The subdued customer sentiment plagued by declining footfalls to the showroom kept sales volume low for these companies.
Commenting on the May sales, Toyota's deputy MD & chief operating officer (marketing & commercial) Sandeep Singh said, "The domestic market continues to be sluggish. We have corrected the dealer's inventory levels and have been able to bring it down to less than 30 days." Amid the gloom, the brightest spot of the entire market remained Duster compact SUV that steered French carmaker Renault's to a 1,338% growth in monthly sales with 5,146 units sold last month.
Other carmakers like General Motors and Honda also remained strong on the customer's mind on the back of new product launches that boosted their performance last month.
"We were able to register the 40% growth only because of the good response to our newly launched vehicles — Chevrolet Sail and Enjoy MPV. Even as the Indian market remains depressed due to the prevailing negative sentiments that has impacted showroom traffic, we expect a good monsoon to bring in some cheers in coming months," P Balendran, vice-president, GM India, said. Sales in the world's sixth-largest car market have been lacklustre as slowing economic growth, rising ownership costs and inflation that has dipped demand from potential buyers. This comes after domestic car sales declined 7% for the first time in a decade in the fiscal year ended March 31.
