Gas Blast Rips Through Mexico Maternity Hospital

Babies Trapped Under Rubble as Gas Blast Rips Through Mexico Maternity Hospital; 3 Dead

A gas explosion at a maternity hospital in Mexico city left at least two babies dead while several other infants are feared to be trapped under the rubble. The blast occurred at the Cuajimalpa Maternal Hospital on Thursday when a gas-supplying truck blew up outside, blowing off at least three-quarters of the building, as per reports.

At least 73 people were injured, including about 20 newborns.

At least nine injured babies were taken to hospitals, according to the Red Cross, while several were feared to be trapped."I remember the cries of the babies under the rubble and the screams of my colleagues," nurse Ivonne Ortega told AFP. "We started pulling babies from the debris who were alive," Ignacio, a volunteer, told CNN. "We pulled out, fortunately, I think we pulled out seven. We would've wanted to pull out more." At least 100 people were inside the hospital at the time of the blast, and while officials first claimed a higher death toll, the official figure was later put at three.

Mexico City health secretary Armando Ahued stated that a nurse and a baby died on the spot after the explosion while another baby succumbed from injuries in a hospital.

President Enrique Pena Nieto said soldiers have been deployed to look for survivors, as he expressed his "sadness and solidarity".

Hyderabad Second Best Place In The World

Hyderabad ranked 2nd best place in world to see in 2015: Magazine

Hyderabad is the second best place in the world that one should see in 2015, according to an international travel publication. The Presidio of San Francisco in the US ranked first on the "Best of the World - 20 Places You Should See in 2015" list, published in the annual guide of 'Traveler' magazine of National Geographic.

In the December 2014-January 2015 issue, the periodical ranked Hyderabad at second position on the list, which included cities Zermatt in Switzerland, National Mall in Washington D C, Corsica, Choquequirao in Peru, Sark in Channel Islands, Koyasan in Japan, Oklahoma City, and Maramures in Romania. "Stories of Hyderabad's poetic past weave amid strings of programming code in this South Eastern India city that was home to one of the richest men in the world, Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last ruling nizam of Hyderabad," the periodical said.

It goes on to talk about how Hyderabad has now become a seedbed for many global IT brands, the opulent Taj Falaknuma Palace, Irani cafes, fifth generation pearl merchants and other attractions.
According to Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, Hyderabad will remain common capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for a period not exceeding ten years; thereafter it will be part and parcel of Telangana.

The Iraq Crisis In 11 Photos

Iraq crisis - the great unravelling: US and Iran need to work together fast, as the barbarians are at the gate

ISIL (also known as ISIS) rapidly consolidated their wins, capturing many cities in northern Iraq. Shown here is their territory on June 16.

They claim to have executed 1700 Iraqi soldiers, but this has not been confirmed.

Soon after capturing Mosul, ISIL released graphic pictures showing them executing Iraqi soldiers.

The present crisis was sparked when ISIL attacked and rapidly took control of the Mosul in early June. Mosul is the second largest city in Iraq, and is predominantly Sunni.

ISIL imposes harsh laws on areas they control, including restrictions on women, association, speech, and a ban of alcohol and cigarettes. Their punishments include cutting off hands and beheadings. Fighters are shown here stomping on confiscated cigarettes.

Syria, where bloodthirsty al Qaeda offshoot the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) gained many of their men, resources and skills during the civil war. They formally declared themselves in April 2013, but have roots in al Qaeda in Iraq - and now they're back there in a big way

Rival Airlines Team Up to Clip Tata SIA Wings in Indian Sky

India's fiercely competitive airlines have teamed up to oppose the entry of another new airline.

IndiGo, Jet Airways, SpiceJet and GoAir have asked the aviation regulator to deny an airline permit to Tata SIA Airlines Ltd, ajoint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines. These airlines, under the banner of the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), have argued in a letter to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) that foreign airlines can invest only in existing ones and not startups according to the previous government's change in policy in September 2012. The May 23 FIA letter addressed to DGCA head Prabhat Kumar has been reviewed by ET. In February, FIA tried to block another joint venture by the Tatas, a no-frills airline with Malaysia's AirAsia Bhd and Arun Bhatia of Telestra Tradeplace. The DGCA dismissed that objection--which the airline lobby had again based on the same policy interpretation--ruling that the government had made it clear that the policy was meant for both existing and startup airlines.

AirAsia India started operations on June 12. AirAsia Bhd owns 49% of the venture and the remaining 51% is held by Tata Sons (30%) and Telestra (21%). ADGCA official said the regulator will dispose of the latest objection by FIA in a day or two. Another DGCA official said the argument in the FIA letter, filed in response to a public notice seeking objections or suggestions from the public and all the persons likely to be affected by the grant of permit to Tata-SIA, does not hold as the government made its stand very clear. A spokesman for Tata SIA, in which the Tatas own 51% and Singapore Airlines the rest, said his company was aware of the development. He had no further comment.

Sanjiv Kapoor, chief operating officer, SpiceJet, said the view of all FIA member airlines on the issue is represented by the grouping. Spokespersons for Indi-Go and Jet had no comment. A spokesman for promoters of GoAir, the Wadias, said a representative for the airline was unavailable. Apart from the interpretation of policy, FIA objected to the airline venture on four other counts: The substantive and efective control (of Tata-SIA) is not vested in Indian hands; the mandate of Schedule XI of Aircraft rules, 1937 (related to minimum airworthiness, operations and other general requirements for grant of air permit) hasn't been satisfied; foreign airlines are not entitled to use sensitive airports; and the matter is sub judice in the Delhi High Court. The second DGCA official said three cases against these new airline ventures — two against AirAsia and one against Tata-SIA by the FIA — are pending in the Delhi High Court. The court will hear all these cases and a separate one filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy against AirAsia on July 11.

"All these cases are being considered as one since the objections are all the same," said the DGCA official. Tata-SIA plans to start operations by early November. It received permission in April from the aviation ministry to start operations. The entry of AirAsia and Tata-SIA is expected to intensify competition in the struggling airline Industry. Indian airlines have posted accumulated losses of $10 billion and their debt has risen to nearly $20 billion, according to aviation consultancy Capa. Besides FIA's letter, DGCA received five responses to its public notice on Tata-SIA. Two were from individuals favouring a permit to the venture. Two were representations asking DGCA to fix norms for hiring pilots. One objection came from a Mr Jain who said the DGCA should not permit investment in a startup airline.

Blogger Throwing $40,000 Birthday Bash

You have to hand it to local lifestyle blogger Sara Shantelle Lim for being one smart cookie. She approached several businesses to sponsor her 27th birthday bash and promised to generate publicity in her blog for them in return. But her luxury lifestyle blog, which she started with her sister last January, has received a total of only 340,000 views to date. Popular local blogger Xiaxue claims to get 40,000 views daily.

And a check of Miss Lim's Instagram profile shows that she has only 610 followers. Most popular local bloggers have more than 20,000 followers on Instagram. Still, she did not let her relative obscurity stop her from generating a whopping $40,000 worth of sponsorship for her birthday party tonight. On Sunday, Miss Lim put out a press release about her "Candylicious Neon Birthday Bash 2014" on Sunday, naming her sponsors and listing the freebies she's getting. She even explained how she managed to get so many sponsors - "mainly her close friends, who wants (sic) to throw Sara an amazing birthday party" while others believe that she can "help them to promote their brand well on her luxury blog" and "tap into her strong network of contacts".

In the press release, she called sponsor Kim Lim, a "good friend". She went on to describe Miss Kim Lim as "the daughter of billionaire Peter Lim, who is known to have recently bought over Valencia Football Club".

Apple to buy Beats for about $3 billion

Apple, seeking to bolster its position in the hotly contested online music sector, said on Wednesday it was buying Beats Music and Beats Electronics in a much-hyped deal worth $3 billion. The move is expected to help the US tech giant, a pioneer in digital music with its wildly popular iTunes platform, ramp up its efforts to counter the successful models of streaming services like Pandora, Spotify and others. The deal for the maker of high-end audio equipment and the subscription streaming music service is Apple's largest acquisition ever.
It calls for Beats co-founders Dr. Dre, a Grammy-winning hip-hop pioneer, and Jimmy Iovine, a veteran music executive, to join the California company.

"Music is such an important part of all of our lives and holds a special place within our hearts at Apple," chief executive Tim Cook said in a statement. "That's why we have kept investing in music and are bringing together these extraordinary teams so we can continue to create the most innovative music products and services in the world." Bringing Beats into the Apple fold will offer opportunities to weave iTunes Radio service into more devices, and even spread the App Store for mini programs to other products, according to analysts. Adding Beats will give Apple fresh star power in music and the ability to get more ad revenues from streaming including mobile.

The deal represents a shift in strategy for Apple, which is known for developing its own products in-house and making only modest acquisitions. But some analysts say the logic for the tie-up is not entirely clear. "It's a little confusing to me what Apple is getting out of it," said Bob O'Donnell, analyst and founder of Technalysis Research. O'Donnell said Beats "appeals to a demographic that is different from some of the typical Apple demographics" and has a streaming music service with "a relatively limited number of customers." "It doesn't seem a great match unless there are other issues at play," O'Donnell told AFP. "But my guess is that Apple isn't going to spend that much without that being the case."

The analyst said Apple may be able to give a boost to its recently launched iTunes streaming service, or possibly get a foothold in the lucrative market for music accessories. Mobile music revenues in the US totaled $1.68 billion in 2013, according to the research firm eMarketer, which estimates that figure will increase to $2.52 billion this year. Ad-supported mobile music revenues topped $1 billion in 2013 and is expected to reach $1.64 billion this year, the research firm said. Since launching five years ago, Beats has become a popular brand for audio equipment and has attracted the likes of Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj, who have designed their own customized Beats headphones and speakers.

Fashion designers and street artists such as Alexander Wang, Futura and Snarkitecture have collaborated on some products. The deal could make Dr. Dre hip-hop's richest mogul, with a net worth of $700 million to $800 million, according to Forbes. The deal, which has been rumored for weeks, is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to be completed later this year, Apple said. "I've always known in my heart that Beats belonged with Apple," said Iovine.

"The idea when we started the company was inspired by Apple's unmatched ability to marry culture and technology. Apple's deep commitment to music fans, artists, songwriters and the music industry is something special." The premium headphone market in the United States grew 20% last year while sales of wireless speakers more than doubled, according to industry tracker NPD. Beats was reported to have claimed 60 percent of the billion dollars spent on top-end earphones in the US last year.

Mom Killed Son Because He Was Gay

Jessica Dutro, Oregon Mom, Allegedly Killed Son Because She Thought He Was Gay

An Oregon mother is facing murder charges after allegedly subjecting her 4-year-old son to deadly beatings because she thought he was gay. As the Associated Press is reporting, Jessica Dutro, 25, has been charged with murder, murder by abuse and second-degree assault in connection with the 2012 death of her son, Zachary Dutro-Boggess. Prosecutors say Zachary died on Aug. 16, 2012 of blunt-force trauma to his abdomen and a delay in medical treatment, according to reports.

Dutro, who is on trial in Washington County Circuit Court, allegedly pointed to her perception of her young son's sexuality in a Facebook message addressed to her boyfriend, Brian Canady, at the time. Using a slur, she wrote that she believed Zachary was going to be gay, and suggested Canady, 24, "work on" her son: “He walks and talks like it. Ugh.” Earlier this month, Canady pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, and second-degree assault, in connection with Zachary's death, The Oregonian previously reported. At the time of his arrest in 2012, Canady admitted to kicking Zachary in the abdomen while wearing shoes, according to The Portland Tribune.

Dutro's 7-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son are also said to have shown signs of physical abuse, according to The Oregonian. Still, her attorney Chris Colburn has argued that while his client was an "unusual" parent, she is not guilty of murder. The case follows that of James Larry Cosby, a Texas father who has been charged with two counts of tampering with evidence in connection with the death of his daughter, Britney Cosby, and her girlfriend Crystal Jackson, both 24, according to KHOU. He is currently being held in the Galveston County Jail on a total of $500,000.00 bonds.

Mom, boyfriend charged in child's death

Tigard police say they have arrested Brian Canady and his girlfriend Jessica Dutro-Boggess for the death of her 4-year-old son.

Google Partnership With Ray-Ban And Oakley Frames

Google Glass set to go stylish with Ray-Ban deal

Google is hoping to make its internet-connected eyewear more stylish as part of a partnership with the makers of Ray-Ban and Oakley frames. The alliance with Italian eyewear company Luxottica Group, announced on Monday, represents Google's latest attempt to make wearable technology look less geeky as it tries to develop new ways to ensure people can stay connected to the internet wherever they go. Last week, Google disclosed that fashion accessory maker Fossil Group is working on an internet-connected wristwatch that runs Google's Android software for mobile devices. Luxottica will develop frames equipped with Google Glass, a computing device that includes a thumbnail-sized screen above the wearer's right eye to view internet content.

The $1,500 gadget also includes a camera that can take hands-free pictures and video, a feature that has raised privacy concerns. Google so far has only sold Glass to a select group of test subjects known as 'Explorers', who have frequently been mocked for wearing a piece of futuristic eyewear that looks better-suited for cyborgs than for humans. Luxottica is expected to help broaden Glass's appeal. Google is also planning to tap into the more than 5,000 stores that Luxottica runs in the US to help sell Glass once the device is released on the general market. Google still hasn't spelled out when Glass will be broadly available, although the Mountain View, California, company is still aiming for later this year.

More than 10,000 people have bought Glass as part of the Explorer programme. In another move to make Glass more practical, Google in January unveiled four frame styles that could also be outfitted with prescription lenses. Those frames cost an additional $225. The prices for Luxottica's line-up of Google Glass products won't be announced until they are closer to going on sale. Besides Ray-Ban and Oakley, Luxottica's other brands include Vogue-Eyewear, Persol, Oliver Peoples, Alain Mikli and Arnette.

Missing Malaysian Plane: Co-Pilot ‘Spoke Last Words’

The co-pilot of a missing Malaysian jetliner spoke the last words heard from the cockpit, the airline's chief executive said on Monday, as investigators consider suicide by the captain or first officer as one possible explanation for the disappearance. No trace of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 has been found since it vanished on March 8 with 239 people aboard. Investigators are increasingly convinced it was diverted perhaps thousands of miles off course by someone with deep knowledge of the Boeing 777-200ER and commercial navigation. A search unprecedented in its scale is now under way for the plane, covering a area stretching from the shores of the Caspian Sea in the north to deep in the southern Indian Ocean. Airline chief executive Ahmad Jauhari Yahya also told a news conference that it was unclear exactly when one of the plane's automatic tracking systems had been disabled, appearing to contradict the weekend comments of government ministers. Suspicions of hijacking or sabotage had hardened further when officials said on Sunday that the last radio message from the plane - an informal "all right, good night" — was spoken after the system, known as "ACARS", was shutdown.

"Initial investigations indicate it was the co-pilot who basically spoke the last time it was recorded on tape," Ahmad Jauhari said on Monday, when asked who it was believed had spoken those words. That was a sign-off to air traffic controllers at 1.19am, as the Beijing-bound plane left Malaysian airspace.
The last transmission from the ACARS system - a maintenance computer that relays data on the plane's status — had been received at 1.07am, as the plane crossed Malaysia's northeast coast and headed out over the Gulf of Thailand. "We don't know when the ACARS was switched off after that," Ahmad Jauhari said. "It was supposed to transmit 30 minutes from there, but that transmission did not come through."

VAST SEARCH CORRIDORS

Police and a multi-national investigation team may never know for sure what happened in the cockpit unless they find the plane, and that in itself is a daunting challenge. Satellite data suggests it could be anywhere in either of two vast corridors that arc through much of Asia: one stretching north from Laos to the Caspian, the other south from west of the Indonesian island of Sumatra into the southern Indian Ocean west of Australia. Kazakhstan, at the end of the northern arc, said it had not detected any "unsanctioned use" of its air space on March 8. "Even if all on-board equipment is switched off, it is impossible to fly through in a silent mode," the Kazakh civil aviation committee said in a statement sent to Reuters. "There are also military bodies monitoring the country's air space. China, which has been vocal in its impatience with Malaysian efforts to find the plane, called on its smaller neighbor to "immediately" expand and clarify the scope of the search. About two-thirds of the passengers aboard MH370 were Chinese.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said he had spoken to Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak by telephone, and had offered more surveillance resources in addition to the two P-3C Orion aircraft his country has already committed. "He asked that Australia take responsibility for the search in the southern vector, which the Malaysian authorities now think was one possible flight path for this ill-fated aircraft," Abbott told parliament. "I agreed that we would do so." Malaysian acting transport minister Hishammuddin Hussein said diplomatic notes had been sent to all countries along the northern and southern search corridors, requesting radar and satellite information as well as land, sea and air search operations. The Malaysian navy and air force were also searching the southern corridor, he said, and US P-8A Poseidon surveillance aircraft were being sent to Perth, in Western Australia, to help scour the ocean.

FOCUS ON CREW

The plane's disappearance has baffled investigators and aviation experts. It vanished from civilian air traffic control screens off Malaysia's east coast less than an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur. Malaysian authorities believe that, as the plane crossed the northeast coast and flew across the Gulf of Thailand, someone on board shut off its communications systems and turned west. That has focused attention on the crew. Malaysian police are trawling through the backgrounds of the pilots, flight and ground staff for any clues to a possible motive in what they say is now being treated as a criminal investigation. Asked if pilot or co-pilot suicide was a line of inquiry, Hishammuddin said: "We are looking at it." But he added it was only one of the possibilities under investigation. Police special branch officers searched the homes of the captain, 53-year-old Zaharie Ahmad Shah, and first officer, 27-year-old Fariq Abdul Hamid, in middle-class suburbs of Kuala Lumpur close to the international airport on Saturday.

Among the items taken for examination was a flight simulator Zaharie had built in his home. A senior police official familiar with the investigation said the flight simulator programs were closely examined, adding they appeared to be normal ones that allow users to practice flying and landing in different conditions. A second senior police official with knowledge of the investigation said they had found no evidence of a link between the pilot and any militant group. "Based on what we have so far, we cannot see the terrorism link here," he said. "We looked at known terror or extremist groups in Southeast Asia. The links are not there."

NORTH OR SOUTH?

Electronic signals between the plane and satellites continued to be exchanged for nearly six hours after MH370 flew out of range of Malaysian military radar off the northwest coast, following a commercial aviation route across the Andaman Sea towards India. The plane had enough fuel to fly for about 30 minutes after that last satellite communication, Ahmad Jauhari said. Twenty-six countries are involved in the search, stretching across much of Asia. Three French civil aviation experts involved in the search for an Air France jet that crashed in the Atlantic in 2009 arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Monday to help. A source familiar with official U.S. assessments of satellite data being used to try to find the plane said it was believed most likely it turned south sometime after the last sighting by Malaysian military radar, and may have run out of fuel over the Indian Ocean. The Malaysian government-controlled New Straits Times on Monday quoted sources close to the investigation as saying data collected was pointing instead towards the northern corridor.

Hindujas Third Richest Family In Britain

Srichand and Gopichand Hinduja
The Hindujas, owners of the Hinduja Group conglomerate, have emerged as the third richest family in Britain, according to an analysis by anti-poverty charity Oxfam released on Monday. The latest rich list from 'Forbes' magazine showed that London-based Srichand and Gopichand Hinduja have a combined wealth of $10 billion, Oxfam said in its report titled 'A Tale of Two Britains'. The five top UK entries analysed for its report found the family of the Duke of Westminster as the richest, followed by David and Simon Reuben, the Hndujas, the Cadogan family, and Sports Direct retail boss Mike Ashley, who between them had property, savings and other assets worth 28.2 billion pounds, or $46.81 billion (with respect to 1 pound = $1.66).

The report implies that Britain's five richest families now own more wealth than the poorest 20 per cent of its population, with their wealth totalling 28.1 billion pounds - an average of 2,230 pounds each. The UK government should explore the possibility of a wealth tax after revealing how income gains and the benefits of rising asset prices had disproportionately helped those at the top, Oxfam said. "Britain is becoming a deeply divided nation, with a wealthy elite who are seeing their incomes spiral up, while millions of families are struggling to make ends meet," Oxfam's director of campaigns and policy, Ben Phillips, said.

"It's deeply worrying that these extreme levels of wealth inequality exist in Britain today, where just a handful of people have more money than millions struggling to survive on the breadline." The charity has urged UK Chancellor George Osborbe to use his Wednesday's Budget to make a fresh assault on tax avoidance and introduce a living wage in a report highlighting how a handful of the super-rich. The report asserted that widening inequality is creating a "vicious circle where wealth and power are increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few, leaving the rest behind".

"This means the rules are constantly rewritten in favour of the rich, for example through policies such as lower taxes for high earners." In January, an Oxfam report found that the richest 85 billionaires on the planet own the same amount between them as half the world's population, or 3.5 billion people.

Political Parties Turn To Social Media

The largest democracy of the world is set for the “big fight”. The General Elections are just a month away. The biggest challenge in front of the parties:  public/voters who have  grown in more ways than one, thanks to the social media and the availability of information on the finger tips. The requirements of the political parties to win the voters confidence: more than just promises. And thus, they are doing everything possible to grab the voters’ attention – from being present on news channels and spending big moolahs on advertising, the political parties are doing everything to be actively involved with the voters on the social media.

Can social media be a useful tool this election
Social media as collaborative projects (such as Wikipedia), blogs and micro-blogs (Twitter), content communities (YouTube), social networking sites (Facebook) and the virtual game-world (apps), the EC has, for the first time, decided to monitor online activities of those contesting the next general elections. Afghan prez's wife delivers in India, Hamid Karzai visits newborn baby

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai's wife delivered a baby girl in India earlier on Tuesday. Karzai made a brief visit to Gurgaon on Wednesday to meet his wife and newborn daughter at the Fortis Memorial Research Institute. Hamid Karzai has studied in India and graduated from Himachal university. "The baby girl was born around 9.30 am on Tuesday. Both the mother and her baby daughter are doing quite well," Afghanistan's ambassador to India, Shaida Mohammad Abdali to TOI. Abdali said the president paid a very short visit to the hospital during his brief transit stay in New Delhi before going to Colombo on Wednesday. "Both the president and the first lady enjoyed a few moments together with their newly born baby-daughter," the ambassador added. Sources said Karzai's wife was admitted to the hospital earlier this week. She was accompanied by her family members and relatives.

Karzai stayed with the family for around 20 minutes. The first lady is likely to be discharged by Friday evening, the sources added. On choosing Gurgaon as the place for the delivery of their third child, Abdali said, "The president's two other beautiful children were born in Afghanistan. In this case, however, due to some predictable medical complication, the specialized doctor in Afghanistan advised that the baby be delivered in India given the availability of specialized medical facilities and personnel." Abdali thanked New Delhi for its support. "We're thankful to the hospital's excellent medical staff for their superb services, as well as to the hospital's management team. And we're grateful to the Indian government for their continued support with everything, including facilitating the hospitalization process." Both countries share co-operative relations with each other. India gave protection to Afghan's former defense minister Abdullah's family in Delhi, when he was fighting Taliban. They returned once the Taliban was defeated.

Pakistani Economy Beats Growth Target, Up By 5%

Pakistan's GDP grew by 5 per cent during the first quarter of the current fiscal, beating the target by running high on industry and service sectors, the country's central bank said on Friday. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP)'s first quarterly report said since macroeconomic indicators were favourable at the start of the year, the increase in real GDP growth in FY14 was discernible.

Pakistan's economists had set a growth target of 4.4 per cent for the current financial year and the central bank in earlier reports had forecast growth of four per cent. The report suggested that the government should speed up structural reforms in fiscal and energy sectors to maintain the current growth momentum and to take the economy to a higher growth trajectory.

"Estimates for growth exceeded expectations: GDP grew by 5 per cent during Q1-FY14, compared to only 2.9 per cent in Q1-FY13, and a target of 4.4 per cent for the full year," the report said. Industry and services were the major drivers of growth, as agriculture performed below target. As the industrial sector revived, import pressures reappeared, especially for capital goods and raw materials, it said.

Pakistani militant leader Haroon Khan alias Mast Gul resurfaced recently with a suicide attack on a hotel in Peshawar on Tuesday that killed nine persons.

As a Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Gul held Indian security forces off during a two-month siege of the Chrar-e-Sharif Sufi shrine in March 1995 and escaped into Pakistan. He wasn’t seen for over a decade until he re-emerged recently as a Pakistani Taliban commander, ironically, fighting the state that once backed him. A photograph released by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan showed a henna-bearded Gul, 47, sitting cross-legged cradling an AK-47.

Gul was the inspiration for a Gabbar Singh-esque lead villain in an unfinished blockbuster in 1997. Actor Rahul Dev reacted with bewilderment and nostalgia to the news of the real Gul’s return. “It’s like the 1990s again man,” Rahul Dev said. “Mast Gul is out and Sanju is back in jail,” he said. In 1996, the Delhi-based model spent many months studying his pictures and videos to play Gul in Mukul Anand’s “Dus”.

The big-budget military thriller starring Sanjay Dutt, Salman Khan as army commandos infiltrating Pakistan, was shelved after Anand died suddenly of a heart attack in September 1997. The previous year, Anand had wrapped up a 40-day schedule in Salt Lake City and the rugged Rocky mountains of Utah. The remote US state stood-in for Jammu and Kashmir where Dev played the main villain, Mast Gul.

“Mukul Anand was fascinated by his name. He had lots of video footage of Mast Gul and a pin board studded with his photographs in his Worli office,” Dev recalls. Anand had made the acclaimed ‘Agneepath’ with Amitabh Bachchan in 1990, was trying to regain lost ground in Bollywood after the disastrous ‘Trimurti’ in 1995. Dus was his best shot. Unit members recall the film’s spectacular action sequences of being anything that the industry had produced, a reason why Anand shot in the US. He recreated India Gate and Rajpath in Utah for a sequence where the lead characters heli-rescue the Pakistani Prime Minister from an exploding limousine.

Dev, who now runs the fitness centre, Breathe in Delhi, has fond memories of the 1996 shoot in Utah. “Sanju had just got out of prison and was in peak physical fitness. We used to wake up at 5 am every morning and work out together and go for mile-long walks. Producer Nitin Manmohan briefly attempted to complete the half-finished film with other directors but gave up. “Dus was Mukul’s baby,” he said a few years ago. “No one else could realise its vision.” Manmohan released outtakes of the unifinished film in a music album in 1997 and made another big budget movie in 2005 using the same title. The reel Mast Gul gathers dust in film cans in Manmohan’s Neha Arts production house, the real one is free to wreak havoc in Pakistan’s north-western region.
