Infosys Diluted Focus On Meritocracy In Past Decade

Infosys diluted focus on meritocracy in past decade: Narayana Murthy

Narayana Murthy with son Rohan
Infosys co-founder and executive chairman NR Narayana Murthy said he had brought his son Rohan into Infosys to challenge the status quo and bring fresh new perspectives. And he indicated the move had worked very well, that Rohan had helped the company start some strategically critical initiatives which had the potential to change the DNA of Infosys for the better.

Murthy stepped down from his executive position on Saturday and delivered a farewell address to shareholders at the company's 33rd annual general meeting here. He elaborated on five major initiatives and said each one was "conceived, implemented and pushed forward by Rohan".

Rohan, a junior fellow at the Society of Fellows, Harvard University, took leave from that assignment to work as his father's executive assistant when the Infosys board requested Murthy to return from retirement and lead the company for a second time last year. Some corporate governance analysts and company observers had questioned Murthy's decision to bring Rohan after having previously said that family members would not be involved in the company.

Murthy said Rohan's first major initiative was to build a sophisticated system to measure the productivity of software engineers. "The manufacturing industry did this a long time ago. However, the software industry has not embraced this idea as yet ... Imagine, if an engineer could see, on a daily basis, how productive he or she is with respect to the rest of the team. This would empower him/her to improve work habits and reduce wasted effort," he said. The second initiative was to introduce automation into software development in a way that it could significantly reduce human effort. "This improves productivity and lowers cost for our clients," he said.

The third initiative was to encourage technical competence — through measures like creating a separate stream for excellent code writers and revising the career path for excellent technology architects. The fourth was to identify a small set of energetic and passionate people at the junior levels who could be mentored and fast tracked. The fifth was to develop a more robust education and re-training programme for engineers given the rapid changes in technologies.

Murthy said he had accomplished the two major tasks assigned to him for this second innings. The first was to build a strong foundation for growth, and the second was to help the board identify a CEO to take the company forward. The company had announced on Thursday that former SAP CTO and board member Vishal Sikka would succeed Infosys CEO and MD S D Shibulal on August 1.

Murthy's points about Rohan were made in the context of building a strong foundation. He also said that Infosys had diluted its focus on meritocracy and accountability during the past decade, and this had compelled him to take some "hard and tough" decisions. He said he identified "hidden jewels" in the company and gave them opportunities, he identified not-so-well-performing people and moved them to tasks they were best suited for, and he cut wasteful and avoidable expenditures that included reducing expenditure on non-revenue earning people abroad. He said he ensured timely salary increases, brought the focus of promotions back to internal people rather than hiring outsiders at higher salaries.

He countered the criticism about an "exodus of executives" since his return with the argument that many of those who left had been evaluated as low performers. "A small number of them left since they had higher aspirations and their aspirations could not be fulfilled in Infosys," he said.

New Infosys CEO Vishal Sikka

'Hope BJP govt will bring good days'

Narayana Murthy expressed the hope that the BJP government would improve the ease of doing business in India and boost investor confidence. "I hope we'll see good days and the poorest of the poor will see better days. I hope our exports will increase, doing business in India will become easier, I hope we will create a lot of jobs," Murthy said on the sidelines of the AGM. India has emerged as a potential investment hub, but continues to be placed low in the World Bank's ranking of countries on the ease of doing business. The investment climate in India has also been vitiated in the past few years.

Apple to buy Beats for about $3 billion

Apple, seeking to bolster its position in the hotly contested online music sector, said on Wednesday it was buying Beats Music and Beats Electronics in a much-hyped deal worth $3 billion. The move is expected to help the US tech giant, a pioneer in digital music with its wildly popular iTunes platform, ramp up its efforts to counter the successful models of streaming services like Pandora, Spotify and others. The deal for the maker of high-end audio equipment and the subscription streaming music service is Apple's largest acquisition ever.
It calls for Beats co-founders Dr. Dre, a Grammy-winning hip-hop pioneer, and Jimmy Iovine, a veteran music executive, to join the California company.

"Music is such an important part of all of our lives and holds a special place within our hearts at Apple," chief executive Tim Cook said in a statement. "That's why we have kept investing in music and are bringing together these extraordinary teams so we can continue to create the most innovative music products and services in the world." Bringing Beats into the Apple fold will offer opportunities to weave iTunes Radio service into more devices, and even spread the App Store for mini programs to other products, according to analysts. Adding Beats will give Apple fresh star power in music and the ability to get more ad revenues from streaming including mobile.

The deal represents a shift in strategy for Apple, which is known for developing its own products in-house and making only modest acquisitions. But some analysts say the logic for the tie-up is not entirely clear. "It's a little confusing to me what Apple is getting out of it," said Bob O'Donnell, analyst and founder of Technalysis Research. O'Donnell said Beats "appeals to a demographic that is different from some of the typical Apple demographics" and has a streaming music service with "a relatively limited number of customers." "It doesn't seem a great match unless there are other issues at play," O'Donnell told AFP. "But my guess is that Apple isn't going to spend that much without that being the case."

The analyst said Apple may be able to give a boost to its recently launched iTunes streaming service, or possibly get a foothold in the lucrative market for music accessories. Mobile music revenues in the US totaled $1.68 billion in 2013, according to the research firm eMarketer, which estimates that figure will increase to $2.52 billion this year. Ad-supported mobile music revenues topped $1 billion in 2013 and is expected to reach $1.64 billion this year, the research firm said. Since launching five years ago, Beats has become a popular brand for audio equipment and has attracted the likes of Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj, who have designed their own customized Beats headphones and speakers.

Fashion designers and street artists such as Alexander Wang, Futura and Snarkitecture have collaborated on some products. The deal could make Dr. Dre hip-hop's richest mogul, with a net worth of $700 million to $800 million, according to Forbes. The deal, which has been rumored for weeks, is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to be completed later this year, Apple said. "I've always known in my heart that Beats belonged with Apple," said Iovine.

"The idea when we started the company was inspired by Apple's unmatched ability to marry culture and technology. Apple's deep commitment to music fans, artists, songwriters and the music industry is something special." The premium headphone market in the United States grew 20% last year while sales of wireless speakers more than doubled, according to industry tracker NPD. Beats was reported to have claimed 60 percent of the billion dollars spent on top-end earphones in the US last year.

Google Partnership With Ray-Ban And Oakley Frames

Google Glass set to go stylish with Ray-Ban deal

Google is hoping to make its internet-connected eyewear more stylish as part of a partnership with the makers of Ray-Ban and Oakley frames. The alliance with Italian eyewear company Luxottica Group, announced on Monday, represents Google's latest attempt to make wearable technology look less geeky as it tries to develop new ways to ensure people can stay connected to the internet wherever they go. Last week, Google disclosed that fashion accessory maker Fossil Group is working on an internet-connected wristwatch that runs Google's Android software for mobile devices. Luxottica will develop frames equipped with Google Glass, a computing device that includes a thumbnail-sized screen above the wearer's right eye to view internet content.

The $1,500 gadget also includes a camera that can take hands-free pictures and video, a feature that has raised privacy concerns. Google so far has only sold Glass to a select group of test subjects known as 'Explorers', who have frequently been mocked for wearing a piece of futuristic eyewear that looks better-suited for cyborgs than for humans. Luxottica is expected to help broaden Glass's appeal. Google is also planning to tap into the more than 5,000 stores that Luxottica runs in the US to help sell Glass once the device is released on the general market. Google still hasn't spelled out when Glass will be broadly available, although the Mountain View, California, company is still aiming for later this year.

More than 10,000 people have bought Glass as part of the Explorer programme. In another move to make Glass more practical, Google in January unveiled four frame styles that could also be outfitted with prescription lenses. Those frames cost an additional $225. The prices for Luxottica's line-up of Google Glass products won't be announced until they are closer to going on sale. Besides Ray-Ban and Oakley, Luxottica's other brands include Vogue-Eyewear, Persol, Oliver Peoples, Alain Mikli and Arnette.

Political Parties Turn To Social Media

The largest democracy of the world is set for the “big fight”. The General Elections are just a month away. The biggest challenge in front of the parties:  public/voters who have  grown in more ways than one, thanks to the social media and the availability of information on the finger tips. The requirements of the political parties to win the voters confidence: more than just promises. And thus, they are doing everything possible to grab the voters’ attention – from being present on news channels and spending big moolahs on advertising, the political parties are doing everything to be actively involved with the voters on the social media.

Can social media be a useful tool this election
Social media as collaborative projects (such as Wikipedia), blogs and micro-blogs (Twitter), content communities (YouTube), social networking sites (Facebook) and the virtual game-world (apps), the EC has, for the first time, decided to monitor online activities of those contesting the next general elections. There are endless examples of how platforms such as Twitter have shaped the current political climate,

Google Will Start Encrypting Your Searches

The tech behemoth plans to make users' searches more private as part of the company's broader campaign to push back against hackers and government surveillance. They've already started in China as a show of defiance against the country's infamous censors. Google is making users’ searches more private as part of the company’s larger efforts to improve information security in light of last year’s revelations regarding government surveillance in the U.S.

Google will introduce encrypted search results globally on a yet-unannounced release schedule. However, Google has already started encrypting searches of Chinese users in defiance of that country’s tight censorship regime, The Washington Post reports. The move represents a shot at Beijing in Google’s standoff with Chinese authorities over unmet demands that the company send Chinese users to government-approved sites. In 2010, Google moved its Chinese operation to semi-autonomous Hong Kong and now accounts for only five percent of China’s search market.

Google’s steps to encrypt search results follow a decision to encrypt Internet traffic between its data centers after Edward Snowden, working with journalists Laura Poitras, Glenn Greenwald and others, revealed last year the extent of National Security Agency surveillance of web traffic in the U.S.

“The revelations of this past summer underscored our need to strengthen our networks. Among the many improvements we’ve made in recent months is to encrypt Google Search by default around the world,” a Google spokesperson told the Post. “This builds on our work over the past few years to increase the number of our services that are encrypted by default and encourage the industry to adopt stronger security standards.”

Apple Gets Patent For Solar-Powered MacBook

Apple's MacBook laptops may soon get more environment-friendly after the tech giant was awarded a patent for a solar-powered device by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The USPTO patent for an “Electronic device display module” granted to Apple Jan. 28 indicated the solar panel may be built into the laptop's housing. "Display structures for the display and the rear plate may be mounted to opposing sides of a shelf portion of the peripheral housing member. The rear plate may be formed from electrochromic glass and may cover photovoltaic cells and touch sensors," it said. A report on PC World said the patent indicates a two-sided display for the lid of a portable computer like the MacBook.

The front of the lid facing the user would still have the display screen but the rear would have “electrochromic glass” or “smart" or “switchable" glass. PC World said the back panel would have embedded solar cells to collect power from light. "In the light-blocking state, the interior of the MacBook’s display would be hidden from the exterior view; the rear panel would appear opaque or translucent. In the light-passing state, the rear panel would appear clear and allow images or other light output from status light-emitting diodes or other light sources," it added. Also, the patent indicates that if the laptop is near a light source, "the light rays would pass through the electrochromic glass that forms the rear plate."

Solar cells would then take in light and convert it into electrical power at 10 mw. Apple proposed that the solar cells would be capable of producing from 100 milliwatts to 1 watt “or even more” in order to charge the laptop’s battery or power the computer while it is in use. "The rear smart glass could also be used to display Apple’s logo by incorporating an additional light emitting diode layer as well as backlighting," PC World said. — LBG, GMA News

Infosys to give 5-7% salary hikes in FY15

Infosys, the information technology services giant, told its employees in India on Wednesday they would get pay increments of five to seven per cent in FY15, a source told Business Standard. Though the second pay rise in nine months, analysts say it is much below the sector average and could lead to several more staffers resigning in the coming months at the Bangalore-based company, especially with the recent improvement in demand. "Everyone was expecting at least 10-12 per cent more. Five to seven per cent is really low," said an analyst with a domestic brokerage house. "Already the company is seeing elevated levels of attrition and this is more bad news for that front."

Despite the earlier salary rise of an average eight per cent, announced soon after co-founder N R Narayana Murthy returned to the company as executive chairman, staff attrition has continued to be steep. For the October-December 2013 quarter, it was 18.1 per cent, highest among peers and in marked contrast to close rival Tata Consultancy Services' 10.9 per cent. Infosys refused to share details about the development and said, "We will announce the salary increments for FY15 during our financial results announcement on April 16. The new salary hikes come nine months after we announced our last salary increases in July 2013."

Some media reports had earlier claimed Infosys, after several senior-level exits in recent months, would look at giving double-digit raises to boost employee morale. While the Indian IT services sector has seen subdued pay rises in the past two years, amid a slump in the business environment globally, experts and employees had high hopes this year. For, demand in the key markets of America and Britain had started showing sign of recovery and most companies have said they expect 2014 to be better than 2013. Experts had said Indian IT services companies might give double-digit raises, going as high as 18 per cent in 2014, against the tepid three to nine per cent in previous years.

Their optimism was fuelled after Nasscom, the sector body, had earlier this month said it expected 13-15 per cent growth in the Indian software and business process outsourcing export segment during 2014-15. In 2013-14, it estimated the growth at 12-14 per cent; the sector managed 13 per cent. In 2012-13, the growth was 10.2 per cent, compared to the original prediction by Nasscom of 11-14 per cent. "IT firms are expected to be quite positive on compensation this year, with expectations of salary hikes to be an average of 11-18 per cent," Surabhi Mathur-Gandhi, senior vice-president at TeamLease had said earlier this month. "We will definitely see a skew of hike considerations on the basis of experience levels, skills specialisation and demand generation by individual firms; ranging from eight to 10 per cent on the lower spectrum to as high as 18-22 per cent on the higher end."

Quinn: Facebook's WhatsApp deal points to how Silicon Valley has changed

In a little over a decade, Silicon Valley has witnessed two nearly $20 billion deals. In 2002, Hewlett-Packard paid $19 billion for rival PC maker Compaq, in a bid by the storied Silicon Valley company to resuscitate its fortunes. And of course there is now Facebook's bid this week to buy WhatsApp, a hot mobile messaging service based in Mountain View. Both deals helped define their eras -- but that's about where the similarities end. And their differences illustrate just how much the valley has changed in such a short period of time. For HP, the Compaq deal was about grabbing market share. It was about cutting costs and finding those ever-elusive "synergies" that corporate types like to talk about. It was a defining deal for the era because it was an effort by the valley's largest company to try to do something bold for boldness's sake and thereby ensure its survival in the post dot-com bust world. Whether it helped or not is debatable; HP became the No. 1 global seller of personal computers, but the PC is no longer the dominant device in the tech industry.

Now what matters are Internet speed, high risk and fast growth, all spurred by users shifting to the uncharted mobile market. Deals aren't about the economics, they're about users and momentum. Worried that its growth is slowing, Facebook saw WhatsApp as a rocket it needed to ride even though the destination -- how it will integrate with Facebook and make money -- remains unknown. And we're in the midst of a boom, not a bust. The WhatsApp deal defines this era because it's the most ambitious attempt so far by a dominant valley company to fend off a future in which it's no longer dominant, an issue that worries all the giants of tech these days. "It's equally quixotic," said Michael S. Malone, who wrote "Bill and Dave: How Hewlett and Packard Built the World's Greatest Company."

The valley is still getting its bearings with the price tag for WhatsApp. The deal, potentially worth up to $19 billion, has inflamed talk of a bubble, although that does not seem to concern Wall Street, which is quite bullish on the big tech companies. But this is a strange new valley, in which apps are born and grow in what seems like obscurity, only to emerge announcing they already dominate the planet. A common reaction for all but a few after the news Thursday seemed to be "WhatsApp? What's that?" Try one of the fastest-growing mobile messaging services ever, with 450 million users and on track to have a billion by the end of this year. "It's the only app we've ever seen with higher engagement than Facebook itself," said CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Sure, HP of the early 2000s and Facebook today are vastly different companies.

Founded in 1939, HP is a global tech giant with an extensive array of products and services. For a period of time after the Compaq deal it was the largest tech company on the planet, measured by revenue. But it suffered then, and does now, with the impression that its glory days are behind it. Facebook is just 10, but it dominates our social Web lives. It does one thing really well, operating a social network that includes a significant fraction of humanity, and under Zuckerberg's laser direction it has executed on a straightforward business model focused on advertising.

And the deals are different. Although the HP-Compaq merger led to a big shareholder battle over whether the two companies' business lines and cultures were a good fit, one could argue that the deal made some business sense. Compaq, founded in 1982, had a strong balance sheet, extensive sales channels and thousands of paying customers. Like HP, it had problems but it felt like a business.

Forget that playbook.

Rather than months, Zuckerberg made the deal in less than two weeks, perhaps pushed by rumors of Google's interest. And there won't be a shareholder revolt; Zuckerberg holds all the cards. Unlike the HP-Compaq deal, Facebook isn't talking about WhatsApp's balance sheet (does it have one?) or how to weave the companies together or cut costs. It wants WhatsApp as a front-row seat to watch and shape the future.

In the "old valley," companies talked about the future but really looked to the past. Combine big companies, offer a complete menu of products and services to customers, and cut costs. In the "new valley," companies jump at new services that may not have revenue but are wildly popular. "It's a land grab for users," said John Furrier, an entrepreneur who founded Silicon Angle. "The HP-Compaq deal was about desperately trying to not fall into the past; Facebook-WhatsApp is all about fleeing into the future," said Paul Saffo, a Silicon Valley forecaster. "The old strategy was to purchase synergy; the new strategy is to buy velocity."

Business school metrics and strategies dominated discussions around the HP-Compaq merger. But that was a fading industry move, a consolidation deal between two old fighters who leaned into each other to soldier on. Zuckerberg doesn't want to be in that position. With WhatsApp, he is bolting a piece of the future on to his company. Who knows where it will take him.

Wipro Invests In Two Tech Start-ups

Nasscom has projected a growth between 13 to 15% for the industry in next financial year

Taking note of the IT industry’s need to push the innovative agenda, the country’s third largest software services firm Wipro has invested in technology two start-ups, its chief executive officer of the IT business and executive director TK Kurien said. Speaking at the three-day flagship event of industry body NASSCOM on Wednesday, Kurien added that the company has invested $19 million in the two companies. “There is innovation capability lying outside the organisation and so there is a need to invest in the same,” he said. More details on the name or business of these companies was not immediately known.  Moving up the value chain through innovation and intellectual property creation is top of the agenda for the $100 billion Indian IT industry. Traditional IT services companies such as Wipro and its peers are currently trying to adapt their business models to the growing popularity of social model, mobility, analytics and cloud.

Audit and consultancy firm KPMG also said on Wednesday that the IT industry will increasingly depend on innovation to achieve its projected growth of $300 billion by 2020. Creating, managing and monetising intellectual property (IP) is expected to drive the industry in the coming decade, the report said. Nasscom has projected a growth between 13 to 15% for the industry in next financial year translating into addition of $15-17 billion of incremental revenue in 2013-14, with improvement in the economic situation in the US and Europe – the industry’s key growth markets. Kurien also said that he expects next fiscal to be better than the current financial year but was of the view that hiring in the sector will not keep pace with the growth as the industry tries to delink revenues from headcount.

Kurien added that the impact of proposed US Immigration Bill on the Indian IT sector could be felt in the short-term. Concerns over the bill – which is at the conferencing level currently between the US House and the Senate -- haven’t ended yet and that there would be some impact of the bill on sector but only in the short-term.

Satya Nadella To Get $1.2 Million salary; total package at $18 million

Cricket-loving Hyderabad-born Satya Nadella will get a base annual salary of USD 1.2 million as new CEO of Microsoft, but his overall package after taking into account bonus and stock awards may reach USD 18 million (Rs 112 crore) a year besides various other perks. As per his new employment agreement, the Indian-origin CEO of USD 78-billion software major will be paid his salary on 'semi-monthly' basis at an annual rate of USD 1.2 million (Rs 7.5 crore). 46-year-old Nadella, who has been with Microsoft for 22 years, would also be eligible for a cash bonus, which can range from zero to 300 per cent, resulting into total payout of up to USD 3.6 million. Besides, he would get stock awards to the tune of USD 13.2 million, taking the total package to USD 18 million.

I raised my hand for this job: New Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Nadella's annual salary would be determined by the company's Executive Incentive Programme (EIP). The top executive would be eligible for an annual EIP stock award worth USD 13.2 million starting 2015 fiscal year, according to Microsoft's offer letter to Nadella. "For Microsoft's 2014 and 2015 fiscal years, your annual cash award target will be 300 per cent of your salary earned as CEO during the fiscal year.

"Your actual cash award can be from 0-300 per cent of the target and will be based on your performance as evaluated by the Board," the letter said, a copy of which has been submitted to the US market regulator SEC also. Satya Nadella's rise reflection of how good Indian students are: Chidambaram. Nadella, who became the third CEO of Microsoft after Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, was paid an annual salary of USD 675,000 for the fiscal year 2013 as the President of the firm's server and tools business. Going by reports, Nadella pocketed a cash bonus of USD 1.6 million last year. Microsoft's fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30.

"We expect that you will work with the Compensation Committee of the Board to assess and revise, if appropriate, the EIP to ensure alignment with business priorities. There are currently two key components of the EIP," the letter said. To further align Nadella's interests with the long-term performance of Microsoft, he would be granted Long-Term Performance Stock Awards (LTPSAs). "One-third of your LTPSAs will be earned based on Microsoft's total shareholder return relative to the S&P 500 over each of three overlapping, five-year performance periods (LTPSA performance periods) commencing on the grant date and the first and second anniversaries thereof," the letter said. Nadella previously held various senior positions at Microsoft in server and tools, cloud and enterprise, online services and advertising platform divisions. He joined Microsoft in 1992.

New Photographic Forensics Help Identify Faces From Reflections In Eyes

Scientists have developed a new technique which can recover the faces of bystanders from reflections in the eyes of photographic subjects, a development that could help identify criminals. As the most commonly photographed objects are faces, there is potential in mining detailed facial images for hidden information, researchers said. Until now, photographers might reasonably have assumed that their own face was absent from the image. But research, led by Dr Rob Jenkins from University of York overturns this assumption. By zooming in on high-resolution passport-style photographs, Jenkins and co-researcher, Christie Kerr from the University of Glasgow were able to recover the faces of bystanders from reflections in the eyes of photographic subjects.

The recovered bystander images could be identified accurately by observers, despite their low resolution. To establish whether these bystanders could be identified from the reflection images, the researchers presented them as stimuli in a face-matching task. Observers who were unfamiliar with the bystanders' faces performed at 71 percent accuracy while participants who were familiar with the faces performed at 84 percent accuracy. In a test of spontaneous recognition, observers could reliably name a familiar face from an eye reflection image.

"The pupil of the eye is like a black mirror. To enhance the image, you have to zoom in and adjust the contrast. A face image that is recovered from a reflection in the subject's eye is about 30,000 times smaller than the subject's face. Our findings thus highlight the remarkable robustness of human face recognition, as well as the untapped potential of high-resolution photography," Jenkins said. The researchers say that in crimes in which the victims are photographed, such as hostage taking or child sex abuse, reflections in the eyes of the photographic subject could help to identify perpetrators. Images of people retrieved from cameras seized as evidence during criminal investigations may be used to piece together networks of associates or to link individuals to particular locations.

Apple won't become a Motorola or BlackBerry: Einhorn

American hedge fund manager David Einhorn has said that Apple is not like other tech companies and is certainly not going to become the next Motorola or BlackBerry. Einhorn's iPrefs proposal, which is essentially the company's shares that pay dividend 'forever', influenced Apple's decision to launch one of the biggest share buybacks in history.

According to AllThingsD, the Greenlight Capital founder said that Apple's decision moves its capital management from a D- to a C as the company is known for its conservative attitude towards its cash. Einhorn acknowledged Apple's old-school approach under Steve Jobs because it makes sense to keep a cushion of cash if the markets hit a bad cycle.

However, given the success of the tech giant's iPhone venture, Einhorn explained that such fears should be overcome as Apple is not like the sinking BlackBerry or Motorola business and is different from them.

More IT firms may come under US lens for Visa issues

Infosys may have put the visa misuse investigations behind it through a civil settlement with the US authorities, but experts believe that the episode might drag its other peers under the scanner. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the US government is investigating other IT companies for violation of immigration laws. Even though the WSJ report did not name any company, there are fears that more number of Indian companies may come under the ambit of such investigations. “Other firms may also face similar investigations as it’s generally viewed that Infosys was not the only firm that was making an extensive use of the B-1 visas,” Peter Bender-Samuel, founder & CEO of research and consultancy firm Everest Group had told Business Standard.

Earlier this week, Infosys, India's second largest information technology (IT) services company, had agreed to pay for $34 million (around Rs 210 crore) to reach a civil settlement with the US authorities on alleged visa misuse matter that dated back to 2011. Even as the Bangalore-based company said it had not indulged in any unlawful activities, the US authorities claimed that Infosys had used inexpensive and easy-to-get B-1 visa-holders to perform jobs that required legitimate H-1B visa-holders or US citizens. According to Poorvi Chothani, managing partner of Mumbai-based immigration law firm, LawQuest, by agreeing to a civil settlement Infosys might have avoided a protracted, time-consuming, unpredictable and expensive legal battle, “but this also indicates the company admits to having violated some rules, perhaps not to the extent it was claimed”. Cyrus D. Mehta of immigration law matters firm Cyrus D. Mehta & Associates, PLLC also said this $34 million settlement should be a 'wakeup call’ for all companies.

“Companies should be more careful when using their employees use the B-1 visa for business purposes,” Mehta said in an email reply from the US.  “Even though it is a very large fine, Infosys should feel fortunate that it was a civil settlement, and there were no criminal implications, as that could have been far worse.” However, Som Mittal, president of industry body Nasscom brushed aside such fears. “In the past there were some interpretation issues and those have all been clarified now. Over the last three years, there have been interactions between the (US) consulates and our members to understand the processes,” Mittal said.

“This (Infosys) is an old story, nothing new has triggered,” he added.

Past immigration-related cases against IT firms:

TCS: Former employees accused the company of misusing Australia’s 457 visa scheme and importing cheap, foreign workers
TCS: Two former employees assert infringement of the rights on its non-US citizen employees in the US
Infosys: Jack B Palmer, one of Infosys’s employees in the US sued the company alleging retaliation against him for raising the visa abuse incidents
Cognizant: Sued for alleged misuse of H-1B visas. 18 employees of client Molina Healthcare Inc. filed lawsuit in Los Angeles court alleging they were replaced by low-paid workers from Cognizant
L&T Infotech: Employee files sexual discrimination case seeking $100 million in compensation; alleged that H1-B immigration visa fraud was 'rampant’ in the company

'Google's Android KitKat targets cheaper smartphones'

Android 4.4 KitKat is catered towards wearable devices and cheaper phones, a source says
Android 4.4 KitKat could be Google's latest attempt to make Android devices cheaper, according to leaked documents.Google wants its new software to work well on low-end phones in addition to the more expensive Samsung Galaxy and HTC devices, according to blogger Amir Efrati who said he has seen confidential Google documents. Efrati said the key improvement will be better memory management to allow "entry-level devices" to run with just 512MB of RAM. Currently less than half of Android devices are running the latest version of the operating system which creates problems for app developers who rely on users having updated features.

The company also reportedly wants to improve the operating software to make it suitable for wearable computing. The new version could include support for three new sensors: geomagnetic rotation vector, step detection and step counters, which could be Android's way of answering Apple's inclusion of a dedicated motion processor in its latest iPhone.Efrati added that the update could also include power saving options with both sensor and WiFi batching to help improve battery life.

He also claimed the KitKat will include native support for a smartphone to become an infrared remote control, and to emulate payment cards that use near-field communication. He said: "Google wants your Android device to be a remote control. The next version of Android lets developers build apps that control TVs, tuners, switches and other devices by sending infrared signals."

smartphones beat feature phone sales

In a first, smartphones beat feature phone sales

Smartphones have surpassed feature phones in global sales, according to a report released by a technology research firm on Wednesday. Smartphones accounted for 51.8% of mobile phone sales in the second quarter of 2013, overtaking feature phone sales for the first time ever, Gartner said.  Worldwide mobile phone sales amounted to 435 million units in the second quarter of this year — an increase of 3.6% from the same period last year, the report said. Worldwide smartphone sales reached 225 million units, up 46.5% from the second quarter of 2012 while feature phone sales stood at 210 million units, declining 21% year-on-year.

"With second quarter of 2013 sales broadly on track, we see little need to adjust our expectations for worldwide mobile phone sales forecast to total 1.82 billion units this year. Flagship devices brought to market in time for the holidays, and the continued price reduction of smartphones will drive consumer adoption in the second half of the year," said Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner. Asia-Pacific, Latin America and Eastern Europe exhibited the highest smartphone growth rates of 74.1%, 55.7% and 31.6% respectively, as smartphone sales grew in all regions, Gartner said.

Korea's Samsung maintained the number one position in the global smartphone market as its share of smartphone sales reached 31.7%, up from 29.7% in the second quarter of 2012. Apple's smartphone sales reached 32 million units in the second quarter of 2013, up 10.2% from a year ago.

Kirobo is world's first talking robot sent into space

Japan has launched the world's first talking robot into space to serve as companion to astronaut Kochi Wakata who will begin his mission in November. The android took off from the island of Tanegashima in an unmanned rocket also carrying supplies for crew onboard the International Space Station (ISS). Measuring 34cm (13 inches), Kirobo is due to arrive at the ISS on 9 August. It is part of a study to see how machines can lend emotional support to people isolated over long periods.

The launch of the H-2B rocket was broadcast online by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (Jaxa). The unmanned rocket is also carrying drinking water, food, clothing and work supplies to the six permanent crew members based at the ISS.

'Giant leap'
Kirobo's name derives from the Japanese words for "hope" and "robot". The small android weighs about 1kg (2.2 pounds) and has a wide range of physical motion. Its design was inspired by the legendary animation character Astro Boy. Kirobo has been programmed to communicate in Japanese and keep records of its conversations with Mr Wakata who will take over as commander of the ISS later this year. In addition, it is expected to relay messages from the control room to the astronaut.

"Kirobo will remember Mr Wakata's face so it can recognise him when they reunite up in space," the robot's developer, Tomotaka Takahashi said. "I wish for this robot to function as a mediator between a person and machine, or a person and the Internet, and sometimes even between people." The biggest challenge was to make the android compatible with space, Mr Takahashi added. Dozens of tests were carried out over nine months to ensure Kirobo's reliability.

Kirobo has a twin robot on Earth called Mirata, which will monitor any problems its electronic counterpart may experience in space. "It's one small step for me, a giant leap for robots," Mirata said of the mission last month. The endeavour is a joint project between Mr Takahashi, car producer Toyota and advertising company Dentsu.
