'Women's cancers preventable, but screening must'

LUDHIANA: With cancers of the breast and cervical most prevalent ones among women living in cities, doctors say there is a dire need to spread awareness about them on a war footing, especially since these are preventable. This comes soon after experts recommended that cancers should be notified as this would enable the authorities to get a true picture of their spread.

Exhorting people to come forward for screening, the president of obstetrics and gynaecology society, Veena Jain, said women's cancers could be prevented. Jain said the society had decided to work on the theme — cancer can be prevented too — adding, of all cancers, the gynaecological ones could be prevented and cured.

"Out of 4.7 lakh new cervical cancers diagnosed every year globally, 30% are from India. This comes close to 1.3 lakh. It's sad that due to lack of information, women are getting themselves screened. This, despite the fact that the test costs only Rs 100," the doctor added.

She said awareness and regular screening could lessen the chances of getting the deadly disease as many vaccines had been developed to control Human Papilloma Virus, or HPV infection. "Considering that 98% cervical cancer cases are caused by HPV, the vaccine provides good protection against it," she said, and added, "It's very important to know that HPV infection does not mean that a woman will develop cervical cancer."

The doctors, who were participating in a cancer awareness week at a private hospital, laid emphasis on prevention and better diagnosis.
