Teen-molester-cop attacked with knife outside court

A young man armed with a knife slashed the face of SPS Rathore today as he was leaving a Chandigarh court. The former cop, accused of molesting 14-year-old Ruchika Girhotra, was leaving a Chandigarh court when the attack took place. Rathore was rushed to a hospital.

Witnesses say the man was holding a video camera in an attempt to pose as a journalist. The police believes this was a pre-planned attack.

Rathore, who retired as Haryana's senior-most policeman in 2002, is also charged with driving Ruchika to commit suicide by harassing her family after she complained against him in 1990. The case against Rathore is being investigated by the CBI.

Rathore was in court today as part of his appeal against the six-month sentence given to him in December for molesting Ruchika in 1990. Since then, Ruchika's family, backed by the government, has filed new cases against him, including forging documents related to her death, and misusing his position to implicate her brother, Ashu, in theft cases.

When Ruchika filed her complaint against Rathore, he was an Inspector-General in the Haryana police. Although a police inquiry found him guilty in 1990, Rathore was promoted repeatedly and retired as the Director-General of the Haryana police in 2002.

Earlier this morning, the court ordered that the trial against Rathore be conducted in-camera.
