Mom Killed Son Because He Was Gay

Jessica Dutro, Oregon Mom, Allegedly Killed Son Because She Thought He Was Gay

An Oregon mother is facing murder charges after allegedly subjecting her 4-year-old son to deadly beatings because she thought he was gay. As the Associated Press is reporting, Jessica Dutro, 25, has been charged with murder, murder by abuse and second-degree assault in connection with the 2012 death of her son, Zachary Dutro-Boggess. Prosecutors say Zachary died on Aug. 16, 2012 of blunt-force trauma to his abdomen and a delay in medical treatment, according to reports.

Dutro, who is on trial in Washington County Circuit Court, allegedly pointed to her perception of her young son's sexuality in a Facebook message addressed to her boyfriend, Brian Canady, at the time. Using a slur, she wrote that she believed Zachary was going to be gay, and suggested Canady, 24, "work on" her son: “He walks and talks like it. Ugh.” Earlier this month, Canady pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, and second-degree assault, in connection with Zachary's death, The Oregonian previously reported. At the time of his arrest in 2012, Canady admitted to kicking Zachary in the abdomen while wearing shoes, according to The Portland Tribune.

Dutro's 7-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son are also said to have shown signs of physical abuse, according to The Oregonian. Still, her attorney Chris Colburn has argued that while his client was an "unusual" parent, she is not guilty of murder. The case follows that of James Larry Cosby, a Texas father who has been charged with two counts of tampering with evidence in connection with the death of his daughter, Britney Cosby, and her girlfriend Crystal Jackson, both 24, according to KHOU. He is currently being held in the Galveston County Jail on a total of $500,000.00 bonds.

Video: Congress MLA Kisses Actress Nagma in Public

Bollywood actress and Congress leader Nagma was inappropriately touched by Congress legislator Gajraj Singh who tried to kiss her in public. Nagma is the party's Lok Sabha candidate from Meerut constituency in Uttar Pradesh and had gone to Hapur to campaign for her party. The Congress leader put one hand on Nagma's cheek and pulled her too close to himself. It was not clear if he wanted to kiss her or whisper something in her ear. The actress-turned-politician immediately shrugged his hand off and got up on her jeep. That this was not unintentional is evident from television footage. Nagma is one of the most glamorous candidates this Lok Sabha election.

Google Partnership With Ray-Ban And Oakley Frames

Google Glass set to go stylish with Ray-Ban deal

Google is hoping to make its internet-connected eyewear more stylish as part of a partnership with the makers of Ray-Ban and Oakley frames. The alliance with Italian eyewear company Luxottica Group, announced on Monday, represents Google's latest attempt to make wearable technology look less geeky as it tries to develop new ways to ensure people can stay connected to the internet wherever they go. Last week, Google disclosed that fashion accessory maker Fossil Group is working on an internet-connected wristwatch that runs Google's Android software for mobile devices. Luxottica will develop frames equipped with Google Glass, a computing device that includes a thumbnail-sized screen above the wearer's right eye to view internet content.

The $1,500 gadget also includes a camera that can take hands-free pictures and video, a feature that has raised privacy concerns. Google so far has only sold Glass to a select group of test subjects known as 'Explorers', who have frequently been mocked for wearing a piece of futuristic eyewear that looks better-suited for cyborgs than for humans. Luxottica is expected to help broaden Glass's appeal. Google is also planning to tap into the more than 5,000 stores that Luxottica runs in the US to help sell Glass once the device is released on the general market. Google still hasn't spelled out when Glass will be broadly available, although the Mountain View, California, company is still aiming for later this year.

More than 10,000 people have bought Glass as part of the Explorer programme. In another move to make Glass more practical, Google in January unveiled four frame styles that could also be outfitted with prescription lenses. Those frames cost an additional $225. The prices for Luxottica's line-up of Google Glass products won't be announced until they are closer to going on sale. Besides Ray-Ban and Oakley, Luxottica's other brands include Vogue-Eyewear, Persol, Oliver Peoples, Alain Mikli and Arnette.

Missing Malaysian Plane: Co-Pilot ‘Spoke Last Words’

The co-pilot of a missing Malaysian jetliner spoke the last words heard from the cockpit, the airline's chief executive said on Monday, as investigators consider suicide by the captain or first officer as one possible explanation for the disappearance. No trace of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 has been found since it vanished on March 8 with 239 people aboard. Investigators are increasingly convinced it was diverted perhaps thousands of miles off course by someone with deep knowledge of the Boeing 777-200ER and commercial navigation. A search unprecedented in its scale is now under way for the plane, covering a area stretching from the shores of the Caspian Sea in the north to deep in the southern Indian Ocean. Airline chief executive Ahmad Jauhari Yahya also told a news conference that it was unclear exactly when one of the plane's automatic tracking systems had been disabled, appearing to contradict the weekend comments of government ministers. Suspicions of hijacking or sabotage had hardened further when officials said on Sunday that the last radio message from the plane - an informal "all right, good night" — was spoken after the system, known as "ACARS", was shutdown.

"Initial investigations indicate it was the co-pilot who basically spoke the last time it was recorded on tape," Ahmad Jauhari said on Monday, when asked who it was believed had spoken those words. That was a sign-off to air traffic controllers at 1.19am, as the Beijing-bound plane left Malaysian airspace.
The last transmission from the ACARS system - a maintenance computer that relays data on the plane's status — had been received at 1.07am, as the plane crossed Malaysia's northeast coast and headed out over the Gulf of Thailand. "We don't know when the ACARS was switched off after that," Ahmad Jauhari said. "It was supposed to transmit 30 minutes from there, but that transmission did not come through."

VAST SEARCH CORRIDORS

Police and a multi-national investigation team may never know for sure what happened in the cockpit unless they find the plane, and that in itself is a daunting challenge. Satellite data suggests it could be anywhere in either of two vast corridors that arc through much of Asia: one stretching north from Laos to the Caspian, the other south from west of the Indonesian island of Sumatra into the southern Indian Ocean west of Australia. Kazakhstan, at the end of the northern arc, said it had not detected any "unsanctioned use" of its air space on March 8. "Even if all on-board equipment is switched off, it is impossible to fly through in a silent mode," the Kazakh civil aviation committee said in a statement sent to Reuters. "There are also military bodies monitoring the country's air space. China, which has been vocal in its impatience with Malaysian efforts to find the plane, called on its smaller neighbor to "immediately" expand and clarify the scope of the search. About two-thirds of the passengers aboard MH370 were Chinese.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said he had spoken to Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak by telephone, and had offered more surveillance resources in addition to the two P-3C Orion aircraft his country has already committed. "He asked that Australia take responsibility for the search in the southern vector, which the Malaysian authorities now think was one possible flight path for this ill-fated aircraft," Abbott told parliament. "I agreed that we would do so." Malaysian acting transport minister Hishammuddin Hussein said diplomatic notes had been sent to all countries along the northern and southern search corridors, requesting radar and satellite information as well as land, sea and air search operations. The Malaysian navy and air force were also searching the southern corridor, he said, and US P-8A Poseidon surveillance aircraft were being sent to Perth, in Western Australia, to help scour the ocean.

FOCUS ON CREW

The plane's disappearance has baffled investigators and aviation experts. It vanished from civilian air traffic control screens off Malaysia's east coast less than an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur. Malaysian authorities believe that, as the plane crossed the northeast coast and flew across the Gulf of Thailand, someone on board shut off its communications systems and turned west. That has focused attention on the crew. Malaysian police are trawling through the backgrounds of the pilots, flight and ground staff for any clues to a possible motive in what they say is now being treated as a criminal investigation. Asked if pilot or co-pilot suicide was a line of inquiry, Hishammuddin said: "We are looking at it." But he added it was only one of the possibilities under investigation. Police special branch officers searched the homes of the captain, 53-year-old Zaharie Ahmad Shah, and first officer, 27-year-old Fariq Abdul Hamid, in middle-class suburbs of Kuala Lumpur close to the international airport on Saturday.

Among the items taken for examination was a flight simulator Zaharie had built in his home. A senior police official familiar with the investigation said the flight simulator programs were closely examined, adding they appeared to be normal ones that allow users to practice flying and landing in different conditions. A second senior police official with knowledge of the investigation said they had found no evidence of a link between the pilot and any militant group. "Based on what we have so far, we cannot see the terrorism link here," he said. "We looked at known terror or extremist groups in Southeast Asia. The links are not there."

NORTH OR SOUTH?

Electronic signals between the plane and satellites continued to be exchanged for nearly six hours after MH370 flew out of range of Malaysian military radar off the northwest coast, following a commercial aviation route across the Andaman Sea towards India. The plane had enough fuel to fly for about 30 minutes after that last satellite communication, Ahmad Jauhari said. Twenty-six countries are involved in the search, stretching across much of Asia. Three French civil aviation experts involved in the search for an Air France jet that crashed in the Atlantic in 2009 arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Monday to help. A source familiar with official U.S. assessments of satellite data being used to try to find the plane said it was believed most likely it turned south sometime after the last sighting by Malaysian military radar, and may have run out of fuel over the Indian Ocean. The Malaysian government-controlled New Straits Times on Monday quoted sources close to the investigation as saying data collected was pointing instead towards the northern corridor.

Hindujas Third Richest Family In Britain

Srichand and Gopichand Hinduja
The Hindujas, owners of the Hinduja Group conglomerate, have emerged as the third richest family in Britain, according to an analysis by anti-poverty charity Oxfam released on Monday. The latest rich list from 'Forbes' magazine showed that London-based Srichand and Gopichand Hinduja have a combined wealth of $10 billion, Oxfam said in its report titled 'A Tale of Two Britains'. The five top UK entries analysed for its report found the family of the Duke of Westminster as the richest, followed by David and Simon Reuben, the Hndujas, the Cadogan family, and Sports Direct retail boss Mike Ashley, who between them had property, savings and other assets worth 28.2 billion pounds, or $46.81 billion (with respect to 1 pound = $1.66).

The report implies that Britain's five richest families now own more wealth than the poorest 20 per cent of its population, with their wealth totalling 28.1 billion pounds - an average of 2,230 pounds each. The UK government should explore the possibility of a wealth tax after revealing how income gains and the benefits of rising asset prices had disproportionately helped those at the top, Oxfam said. "Britain is becoming a deeply divided nation, with a wealthy elite who are seeing their incomes spiral up, while millions of families are struggling to make ends meet," Oxfam's director of campaigns and policy, Ben Phillips, said.

"It's deeply worrying that these extreme levels of wealth inequality exist in Britain today, where just a handful of people have more money than millions struggling to survive on the breadline." The charity has urged UK Chancellor George Osborbe to use his Wednesday's Budget to make a fresh assault on tax avoidance and introduce a living wage in a report highlighting how a handful of the super-rich. The report asserted that widening inequality is creating a "vicious circle where wealth and power are increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few, leaving the rest behind".

"This means the rules are constantly rewritten in favour of the rich, for example through policies such as lower taxes for high earners." In January, an Oxfam report found that the richest 85 billionaires on the planet own the same amount between them as half the world's population, or 3.5 billion people.

Google Will Start Encrypting Your Searches

The tech behemoth plans to make users' searches more private as part of the company's broader campaign to push back against hackers and government surveillance. They've already started in China as a show of defiance against the country's infamous censors. Google is making users’ searches more private as part of the company’s larger efforts to improve information security in light of last year’s revelations regarding government surveillance in the U.S.

Google will introduce encrypted search results globally on a yet-unannounced release schedule. However, Google has already started encrypting searches of Chinese users in defiance of that country’s tight censorship regime, The Washington Post reports. The move represents a shot at Beijing in Google’s standoff with Chinese authorities over unmet demands that the company send Chinese users to government-approved sites. In 2010, Google moved its Chinese operation to semi-autonomous Hong Kong and now accounts for only five percent of China’s search market.

Google’s steps to encrypt search results follow a decision to encrypt Internet traffic between its data centers after Edward Snowden, working with journalists Laura Poitras, Glenn Greenwald and others, revealed last year the extent of National Security Agency surveillance of web traffic in the U.S.

“The revelations of this past summer underscored our need to strengthen our networks. Among the many improvements we’ve made in recent months is to encrypt Google Search by default around the world,” a Google spokesperson told the Post. “This builds on our work over the past few years to increase the number of our services that are encrypted by default and encourage the industry to adopt stronger security standards.”

Google faces up to $5 billion fine from Competition Commission of India

Google, which is facing antitrust investigation in India by fair trade watchdog CCI, can face a penalty of up to about five billion dollars if it is found to have violated competition norms of the country. Google said it is "extending full cooperation" to the CCI in its investigation. The conclusion of a two-year review by the US antitrust watchdog has concluded that the company's services were good for competition, it added. The case has been before the Competition Commission of India (CCI) as well for over two years now and it relates to allegations that Google is abusing its dominant position in the internet search engine space. Under competition regulations, an entity found violating the norms could be slapped with penalty of up to 10% of its three-year annual average turnover. In the case of Google, its annual revenues in the last three years amounts to a staggering $49.3 billion and the maximum penalty can be up to nearly $5 billion. When asked about the ongoing probe and the potential penalty of up to five billion dollars, a Google spokesperson told : "We are extending full co-operation to the Competition Commission of India in their investigation." "We're pleased that the conclusion of the Federal Trade Commission's two year review was that Google's services are good for users and good for competition," he said in an e-mailed statement.

While Google has settled anti-trust cases in the US and European Union, Indian competition regime does not have provisions for settlement process. Besides a complaint filed with CCI cannot be withdrawn. Finding prima facie evidence of violations, CCI had referred the matter to its investigation arm -- Director General (DG) -- for a detailed probe. Sources said that the DG has also collected comments from third-parties with regard to this case and it is likely to soon submit its report to CCI. The Director General could not be contacted for comments. Apart from penalty, CCI is empowered to pass orders to correct a company's conduct in the market place. Also, the regulator can go for structural remedies that could see breaking up of dominant enterprises into separate businesses.

The complaint against Google, also one of the world's most valued company, was first filed by advocacy group CUTS International way back in late 2011. Later, matrimonial website matrimony.com also filed a complaint. Referring to Google's settlement with the European Commission, matrimony.com counsel Ferida Satarawala said: "Google's unfair use of trademarks as well as its retaliatory conduct are not specifically addressed in the European settlement and are distinct theories of harm being pursued by the CCI. Therefore, this settlement is unlikely to address CCI's concerns in our case".

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi may face serious trouble ahead of the Lok Sabha election. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) moved the Election Commission of India (EC) demanding against Rahul who accused RSS of killing Mahatma Gandhi. BJP accused Congress and its leader of flouting the Model Code of Conduct, BJP filed its complain on Sunday, March 9. In a memorandum to Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath, BJP charged Gandhi and his party with being "habitual offenders" of the poll code and flaring up communal tension ahead of elections. "It is prayed that appropriate action may kindly be taken against the Indian National Congress as well as Rahul Gandhi, MP and Vice President, Indian National Congress for violating the Model Code of Conduct and the recognition of Indian National Congress as a National Party may kindly be withdrawn immediately for repeated violations of the Model Code of Conduct," it said. BJP Vice President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the entire tone and tenor of Gandhi's speech was to incite the feelings of the people and create hatred towards BJP as well as RSS.

He said his statement makes it clear the aim is to put across absolutely false and baseless notions in the minds of the people that BJP creates confrontation and enmity between Hindus and Muslims as well as amongst other communities and regions. "The intention of Rahul Gandhi was to incite the feelings of the people by falsely portraying the RSS to be responsible for his (Mahatma Gandhi's) death and further create a sense of fear amongst the Hindus, Muslims and other communities that the BJP will create tensions between them," Naqvi said in the memorandum. He said the statements of Gandhi "are not only false, disgraceful, condemnable, baseless but also an utter violation of the Model Code of Conduct as well as established democratic practices". "It is an attempt to mislead the people of the country by character assassination of the BJP, RSS and its members, based on completely false and baseless allegations and propaganda," he said

Afghan prez's wife delivers in India, Hamid Karzai visits newborn baby

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai's wife delivered a baby girl in India earlier on Tuesday. Karzai made a brief visit to Gurgaon on Wednesday to meet his wife and newborn daughter at the Fortis Memorial Research Institute. Hamid Karzai has studied in India and graduated from Himachal university. "The baby girl was born around 9.30 am on Tuesday. Both the mother and her baby daughter are doing quite well," Afghanistan's ambassador to India, Shaida Mohammad Abdali to TOI. Abdali said the president paid a very short visit to the hospital during his brief transit stay in New Delhi before going to Colombo on Wednesday. "Both the president and the first lady enjoyed a few moments together with their newly born baby-daughter," the ambassador added. Sources said Karzai's wife was admitted to the hospital earlier this week. She was accompanied by her family members and relatives.

Karzai stayed with the family for around 20 minutes. The first lady is likely to be discharged by Friday evening, the sources added. On choosing Gurgaon as the place for the delivery of their third child, Abdali said, "The president's two other beautiful children were born in Afghanistan. In this case, however, due to some predictable medical complication, the specialized doctor in Afghanistan advised that the baby be delivered in India given the availability of specialized medical facilities and personnel." Abdali thanked New Delhi for its support. "We're thankful to the hospital's excellent medical staff for their superb services, as well as to the hospital's management team. And we're grateful to the Indian government for their continued support with everything, including facilitating the hospitalization process." Both countries share co-operative relations with each other. India gave protection to Afghan's former defense minister Abdullah's family in Delhi, when he was fighting Taliban. They returned once the Taliban was defeated.

Rahul Gandhi Attacks BJP, RSS Over Communal Violence

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Thursday accused the BJP-led opposition of spurring communal and ethnic violence as a tool to electoral victory. At a public rally in Sonale village near Bhiwandi in Thane district, Rahul Gandhi reiterated the allegation against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), accusing the organisation of killing Mahatma Gandhi. "The RSS shot and killed Mahatma Gandhi. Now they (BJP) are adopting their (RSS) principles and speaking about them. Sardar Patel was a Congress leader and he clearly wrote about the RSS. It opposed Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel. Now, they are appropriating the Congress ideology and its leaders," Rahul Gandhi said. A day earlier, Gandhi had said in Aurangabad that "the Congress would send the Bharatiya Janata Party packing with love".

Bhiwandi is a Muslim-dominated town, which was in the past hit by communal riots. Gandhi said the Congress has always taken along all sections of society, the rich and poor, and people of all religions to ensure that the fruits of development reached everyone. "When we speak of the MNREGA or RTI, is it only for one community or religion? We believe it should be for all. Wherever the opposition goes, they create a rift between Hindus and Muslims, between one region and another. We believe in taking everyone together to take the country forward," Gandhi said. He said the Congress was born in Maharashtra, and the party's ideology was inspired by the Bhagwad Gita, "the one Shivaji, Ashoka and (Mahatma) Gandhi spoke about".

"We listen to all - the poor, tribals, minorities and all factions - as they are in India and contributing to the country's growth and progress." Taking a dig at the BJP's attempts to project Narendra Modi as a one-man army capable of solving all problems, Gandhi said the Congress believes in the "power of the poor". "What has been done in the past 60 years, they (BJP) say they will do it in three months. Who was responsible for all this development? You - the farmers and the poor, the people of the state and country - not just the Congress. I can never say that only one person took India forward, that will be wrong," he said. With the public rally, the Congress leader wound up his two-day visit to Maharashtra. He visited Dhule, Aurangabad, Mumbai and Thane.

AAP leader Manish Sisodia's Car Attacked In Gujarat

A day after clashes broke out between workers of the Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal claimed Manish Sisodia’s car was attacked in a Gujarat town on Thursday evening. “Manish's car attacked just now. His window pane smashed (sic),” Kejriwal tweeted to his 1.45 million followers at 8.38pm on Thursday. Kejriwal and his close aides are on a four-day tour of Gujarat to “expose” chief minister Narendra Modi’s “bogus development model”. “Aap vol(unteers), u shud not react at all or do any protests. Let them keep attacking us (sic),” the AAP chief posted on the microblogging website. Kejriwal on Thursday admitted his party workers indulged in violence outside the Bharatiya Janata Party headquarters in New Delhi on Wednesday. He apologised on behalf of his party workers and said the AAP would not repeat its mistake.

Sisodia alleged workers of the BJP were behind the attack on his car. “Our car attacked by bjp goons in Himmatnagar (Sabarkantha)… If BJP leaders think they can hide corruption in Gujarat by attacking my car, then they are underestimating the power of Aam Gujarati,” Sisodia tweeted. The clashes between the AAP and the BJP occurred on Wednesday evening, after the Election Commission announced that the Lok Sabha elections would begin on April 7.

Members of the AAP attacked the main office of the Opposition BJP in New Delhi. Fourteen people were later arrested for rioting and assembling illegally. Similar clashes also occurred in Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi and Allahabad.

What is even more incredible is that the film has garnered this collection from just 800 screens where it was released. That apart, the film had made Rs 15.5 crores revenue even before release and the international theatrical collection is more than Rs 8 crores till date and still counting, making the total revenue pie more than 50 crores.

Says Sajid: "It was both an honour and a challenge when Imtiaz entrusted me with the big responsibility of Highway's release. We worked with our distribution partners at UTV to give the film an appropriate release across 800 screens with carefully selected cities and cinemas across the country." The film, with Anil Mehta's unmatched cinematography and A.R. Rahman's unforgettable music, has created a very strong word of mouth wave in the audience all over. "Highway was always a profitable film, made and marketed at a tight cost but what was really heartwarming was the way the audiences warmed up to the movie," adds Sajid. "We not just made a super hit film but a much loved one which will be seen and remembered with much fondness for years to come." Says Imtiaz Ali, "Happy that the film has reached the audience. We are moved by the response and very thankful. This experience has taught us many new things."

Asia Cup Final

Asia Cup: Sri Lanka thrash Afghanistan by 129 runs, to final

In-form Sri Lanka sailed into the summit clash of the Asia Cup cricket tournament with a resounding 129-run victory over minnows Afghanistan, here today. Opting to bat, the islanders rode on Kumar Sangakkara`s patient 76 and skipper Angelo Mathews` breezy 41-ball 45 to post a competitive 253/6 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. In reply, Afghanistan were bundled out for 124 in 38.4 overs, sealing Sri Lanka`s place in the final of the five-nation continental tournament, and further diminishing India`s chances. India have lost two of their three matches and need to win with a bonus point against Afghanistan and hope that Bangladesh score an upset victory over Pakistan in their last respective round-robin matches.

Afghanistan`s run-chase never really got the momentum as they lost wickets at regular intervals, slipping to 73 for five in the 21st over. Their batting was in stark contrast to the efforts put in by the Afghan bowlers, who kept the free-flowing Lankan batsmen in check for a major part of their innings before Mathews let loose. Sangakkara, though, was the man who kept the Lankan innings afloat when the going got difficult. Afghan captain Mohammad Nabi contributed 37, while Noor Ali Zadran (21) and Asghar Stanikzai (27) got out after getting starts. Nabi hit three fours and a six during his 40-ball knock.

The rest of the batting just caved in without putting up any sort of resistance, a far cry from their outing against hosts Bangladesh, who were humbled by the spirited strife-torn nation a couple of days ago. Among the wickets for Sri Lanka were Ajantha Mendis (3/11), Thisara Perera (3/29) and Chaturanga de Silva (2/29), who proved to be handful for the Afghani batsmen.

Jodhpur Is an Oasis in the Middle of the Mad Rush of India

Section of the Mehrengarh Fort
For a respite from the frenetic bustle of New Delhi and Mumbai, head to Jodhpur to kick back among the deep history of the “Land of Death." An inscription on the unassuming entrance gate to the Raas Jodhpur should read, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” Rolling through the hotel’s gate after a now-routine, herky-jerky, Indian car ride—this time through the labyrinthine streets of old Jodhpur—and entering what is an oasis of calm in a country of chaos, felt like one big sigh of relief.
India is a land of breathtaking historical monuments, amazing food, and fascinating people, but it can also be incredibly overwhelming in a way few places in the world are. Major cities like New Delhi and Mumbai—the two cities I visited before and after Jodphur on a recent trip—can leave a traveler feeling a bit beleaguered from the relentless hawking of goods, the air pollution, the smells that are hard to place, the constant vigilance against con artists, the traffic that is heard just as much as seen, and a crush of people that makes a rush-hour subway ride in New York City seem like the most private experience on earth.

While these characteristics (which are as much positive and invigorating experiences as they are exhausting) can be daunting, one of the best ways to ameliorate their effects is a stay in a place like the Raas, located in the heart of Jodhpur in the Rajasthan Desert. Jodhpur is an historic mid-sized Indian city situated about halfway between New Delhi and Mumbai that is dry and sunny this time of year, and, most importantly, relaxing.

Jaswant Thada
The city is dominated by a magnificent 14th-century palace and fort complex of Mehrengar, built by the Rajput clan in the kingdom of Marwar, which is in present-day Rajasthan. Built on top of a giant plateau, the palace rises 120 feet in height, and, coupled with its beautiful reddish brown sandstone, inevitably calls to mind the Red Keep in Game of Thrones. As the capital of Marwar, which means “land of death,” the fortress was once the home of the maharajahs of Jodhpur, but is now a well preserved museum that provides an excellent introduction to life under the Rajputs, who ruled the region until India’s independence in the 20th century. The narrator of the museum’s audio guide (free with your ticket) deserves a Grammy for spicing up history with a voice that sounds like the Indian version of the guy from VH1’s Fabulous Life. But most of the credit for the comprehensive exhibition goes to the Singh family, many of whom now reside in a 20th-century monstrosity just outside the city, who has preserved so much of their kingdom’s history. The museum’s highlights are the phantasmagoric “phool mahal” (pleasure room), the captivating collection of Rajasthani artwork, and the little details about daily life in a time and place worlds apart from today. For instance, in one room there are beautiful reed blinds that seem to have floral patterns painted on them. But they were once used for so much more than just decoration. Each reed has multi-colored silk wrapped around it that, when doused with water in the summer, would cool the room as the air passed through and evaporated the water.

Looking out from the fort at the expanse of Jodhpur, one can see why it is called the “Blue City,” with large swathes of blue houses covering the town. Depending on who you ask, the houses are painted blue either for historical reasons, denoting the ownership of a Brahmin family, to keep the houses cool in the summer, or because blue is believed to keep insects at a distance. Away from the city, towards the desert and along the ancient wall unfurling through the arid landscape, the delicate cenotaph of Jaswant Thada can be seen. In the late 19th century, Maharaja Sardar Singh built the beautiful white marble monument in memory of his father. The building today is a memorial to the various rulers of the family and displays their portraits inside. It is best to visit either early in the morning or in the late afternoon when the carved sheets of finely polished marble seem to glow.

If you're missing the adrenaline fix of the larger cities, there is a popular zip line that launches from Mehrengar. It flies across the battlements and desert valleys, providing jaw-dropping views of the surrounding area, particularly when moving past the lake with the fort in the background. Or, if you prefer the clamor of the cities, you can find chaos, and maybe a few bargains, in the markets around Jodhpur’s central clock tower. But to see obscene displays of wealth, take an auto rickshaw out to the museum at the Umaid Bhawan Palace. Built by the grandfather of the current Maharaja between 1928 and 1943, it was one of largest private palaces in the world when it was completed. While the property and its 347 rooms are certainly jaw dropping in scale, culturally and aesthetically it is a significant letdown after touring the gem that is Mehrangar. While the family says it was built as a drought relief project, the palace, with its marble squash courts and lavish Art Deco rooms, reads more like a 1930’s version of Mukesh Ambani’s billion-dollar home in Mumbai. Part of the palace remains a private residence, and the other is an incredibly expensive Taj hotel. There is a museum that is open to the public, which provides a fascinating window into the ruling family at the twilight of its influence.

View of Jodhpur from Mehrengarh
Once back at the Raas, kick back and enjoy the pool with its one-of-a-kind view of Mehrangar. The Raas, which is a Design Hotel, is located in a restored 18th-century haveli, or mansion, that has been outfitted with sleek modern elements like a falis (screen barrier) of sandstone that shades each hotel room from the desert sun and the Apple-store-like glass box lobby. The attention to historical preservation and detail during the haveli’s restoration and modernization is reassuring. Significant amounts of architectural beauty in India have been lost to history, whether because of misuse, lack of maintenance, or destruction. Compared to the Red Fort in New Delhi, where the gem of the Mughal capital is in a depressing state of decay, or what remains of the various havelis in Old Delhi, the Raas stands out for its attention to salvaging the beauty of historic India while simultaneously keeping it relevant. But the highlight of the hotel, at any time of day, is the view of Mehrangar from the top restaurant and bar. After the noise, chaos, and jostling for space that a trip to India normally entails, there is almost nothing better than sipping an ice cold Kingfisher as the nearby mosque begins its call to prayer and the desert sky turns pink and red, like the fortress piercing its horizon.

Kajal Aggarwal Interview

I'm not desperate to get married, says Kajal Aggarwal

Actress Kajal Aggarwal is in the news now for performing the Rahu Ketu pooja at Sri Kalahasthi temple recently. And the buzz was that she sought divine intervention because she wanted to do 'parihara' as her younger sister, actress Nisha, got married ahead of her, and some of her recent works in films have come in for criticism.

Ask the actress about this, and she laughs,
"Some of my cousins from the US, who had come down for the wedding, wanted to visit Tirupati, and I went to the temple along with my family. Sri Kalahasthi is just an hour from there, and we thought it would be good for us to go there as well. We went as a gang, and performed small poojas. This has nothing to do with my characters in the film not being appreciated or that my films weren't doing well. I'm very happy that my sister got married to the guy she had been dating. And, I'm not desperate to get married. I'm happy where I am."

But, does criticism about her performance in her recent films or the fate of her films at the BO affect her?
"I enjoyed shooting for all the films that I have done and have no regrets. In Jilla, I played a cop for the first time, and had the opportunity to work with a legend like Mohanlal and an actor like Vijay. I can't argue with the director and ask or more screen time because the film is his vision. And, in All In All Azhagu Raja, I had a full-on comic character, something that I haven't given a shot at before," she justifies, "Criticism doesn't affect me — it actually helps me understand what the audience like. Everyone makes mistake, and it's important you learn from them."

After Singham and Special 26, the actress hasn't signed any film in Bollywood. Why's that?
"I did get offers, but nothing was appealing. I currently have two scripts in hand, and I'll decide on them soon," she states.

Back in Tamil, she will be starting work on her film with Balaji Mohan.
"It's a fun romantic film. I play a city-bred girl in it, and we are planning to go on floors with the film from May," she says, "I also have a film in Telugu with Krishna Vamsi and Ram Charan. I've worked with the two of them earlier, and it will be fun to shoot with them together."

There was also a buzz that she was in talks to do Nanbenda with Udhayanidhi Stalin, a role that finally went to Nayanthara.
"Film for which you are in talks might not always materialize. I was in discussion to do Udhay's fillm, but it didn't work out. Similarly, I was approached for a film with Kamal Haasan long back, but I couldn't do it because of date issues. These things keep happening," she signs off.

Ekta Kapoor is Optimistic About Her own Shaadi

Her film Shaadi Ke Side Effects has opened well and Ekta Kapoor, who hasn’t had a hit since The Dirty Picture, is ecstatic. The producer admits that Vidya Balan is her lucky mascot. “When I learnt that Vidya and Farhan were signed on for Shaadi, I didn’t have to think twice before deciding to come on board. They are phenomenal actors. And I have always had immense faith in Vidya.”

On the personal front, Ekta confesses that she hasn’t come across her dream man. “I’m a very successful woman. Unfortunately, the men I’ve met don’t have the confidence to match the personality and the clout of a successful woman. They fear getting overshadowed,” she says. Ekta adds that even though she hasn’t been lucky in love yet, she is hopeful that some day she’ll have a successful marriage.

TN Suspends Cop Tied to IPL Probe

Tamil Nadu IPS officer G Sampath Kumar, who had deposed before the Justice Mudgal Committee probing the IPL betting-match fixing scandal, has been suspended on charges of receiving money from a bookie.
Sampath Kumar had hit the headlines after claiming in his deposition that bookie Uttam C Jain alias Kitty had told him during interrogation that some senior India players had attended a party thrown by some bookies. Sampath had also told the committee that Kitty had taken the name of Chennai Super Kings' former team principal Gurunath Meiyappan in the context of match-fixing. The officer, who was transferred from the special branch, which initially probed the case, to Trichy as SP, Railways, had been critical of the Crime Branch-CID which probed the betting scandal in Tamil Nadu. Announcing the suspension of IPS officer G Sampath Kumar, who had deposed before the Justice Mudgal Committee probing the IPL betting-match fixing scandal, a statement issued by the governor of Tamil Nadu and signed by state home secretary Apurva Varma, read: "Disciplinary proceedings against Sampath Kumar is contemplated; the state government in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (a) of sub-rule (1) of the rule 3 of the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969, has placed the officer under suspension with immediate effect. Sampath Kumar has been asked not to leave Trichy without the permission of Varma."

Police sources said Sampath Kumar was suspended because the CB-CID policemen had booked a case against him for collecting Rs 55 lakh from one of the punters who wanted to be let scot-free. The CB-CID officials said they recovered the cash and 10kg of silver from two people close to Sampath Kumar.

After the IPS officer's statement on Kitty's revelations were leaked to the media in early February, CB-CID director general N P Singh had said that his team would summon the officer over his controversial statement. "Sampath Kumar didn't have powers to get statement from the bookie as he was not involved in the IPL inquiry," Singh had then said.

Pakistani Economy Beats Growth Target, Up By 5%

Pakistan's GDP grew by 5 per cent during the first quarter of the current fiscal, beating the target by running high on industry and service sectors, the country's central bank said on Friday. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP)'s first quarterly report said since macroeconomic indicators were favourable at the start of the year, the increase in real GDP growth in FY14 was discernible.

Pakistan's economists had set a growth target of 4.4 per cent for the current financial year and the central bank in earlier reports had forecast growth of four per cent. The report suggested that the government should speed up structural reforms in fiscal and energy sectors to maintain the current growth momentum and to take the economy to a higher growth trajectory.

"Estimates for growth exceeded expectations: GDP grew by 5 per cent during Q1-FY14, compared to only 2.9 per cent in Q1-FY13, and a target of 4.4 per cent for the full year," the report said. Industry and services were the major drivers of growth, as agriculture performed below target. As the industrial sector revived, import pressures reappeared, especially for capital goods and raw materials, it said.

Apple Gets Patent For Solar-Powered MacBook

Apple's MacBook laptops may soon get more environment-friendly after the tech giant was awarded a patent for a solar-powered device by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The USPTO patent for an “Electronic device display module” granted to Apple Jan. 28 indicated the solar panel may be built into the laptop's housing. "Display structures for the display and the rear plate may be mounted to opposing sides of a shelf portion of the peripheral housing member. The rear plate may be formed from electrochromic glass and may cover photovoltaic cells and touch sensors," it said. A report on PC World said the patent indicates a two-sided display for the lid of a portable computer like the MacBook.

The front of the lid facing the user would still have the display screen but the rear would have “electrochromic glass” or “smart" or “switchable" glass. PC World said the back panel would have embedded solar cells to collect power from light. "In the light-blocking state, the interior of the MacBook’s display would be hidden from the exterior view; the rear panel would appear opaque or translucent. In the light-passing state, the rear panel would appear clear and allow images or other light output from status light-emitting diodes or other light sources," it added. Also, the patent indicates that if the laptop is near a light source, "the light rays would pass through the electrochromic glass that forms the rear plate."

Solar cells would then take in light and convert it into electrical power at 10 mw. Apple proposed that the solar cells would be capable of producing from 100 milliwatts to 1 watt “or even more” in order to charge the laptop’s battery or power the computer while it is in use. "The rear smart glass could also be used to display Apple’s logo by incorporating an additional light emitting diode layer as well as backlighting," PC World said. — LBG, GMA News

Asia Cup 2014: That Man Kumara Sangakkara Again

Quite a few times during Sri Lanka’s successful chase, which resulted in their two-wicket win over India, Virat Kohli would have missed a spinner. The Indian skipper would have rued not playing Amit Mishra and regretted choosing pace bowling all-rounder Stuart Binny as Varun Aaron’s replacement. Binny scored a four-ball duck and looked completely innocuous with his dibbly-dobblies. On a Fatullah Cricket Stadium pitch, where the ball gripped and stayed low, Mishra would have turned the ball and, maybe, the game in India’s favour. The two frontline spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, did enough to pull things back for their team. Jadeja removed Mahela Jayawardene and Dinesh Chandimal in the first two balls of his fifth over to put the brakes on Sri Lanka’s run chase. The left-arm spinner accounted for Chaturanga de Silva in his final over to keep India in the hunt but after his spell, India dragged their feet and finally gave up. Jadeja finished with three for 30 in his 10 overs.

Ashwin, returning to his usual action and wearing half sleeves, bowled well, too. Forty-two runs in his 10 overs with the wickets of Kusal Perera and Lahiru Thirimanne, was a good effort. He also reached the landmark of 100 ODI wickets in the process. But, by the time he and Jadeja were finished, five more overs were to be played. With Kumar Sangakkara and Thisara Perera at the crease and no specialist spinner at hand for Kohli, Sri Lanka had little worry. Pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami did get a few toe-crushers in but still the runs leaked. Eventually, Sri Lanka won by two wickets, with four balls to spare, to top the group. They now have only Bangladesh and Afghanistan to play against and their place in the final looks almost certain. For India, they will have to win against Pakistan on Sunday to stay afloat in the competition.
Five drops
Despite their fast bowlers’ lack of discipline, India would have managed to defend the total had they been sharp on the field. A total of five catches were dropped, and that meant Sri Lanka were let off the hook too often. A collision between Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan in the third over during Sri Lanka’s run chase allowed Thirimanne a reprieve. He was on one then. Four runs later, Jadeja dropped him at cover. Shami was the bowler on both occasions. Perera got a life when he was on 36. Another tough chance at deep mid-wicket off Binny and once again it was the team’s best fielder Jadeja who had failed to hold on to the catch. The two openers went on to add 80 runs for the first wicket.

But India were worst hit by a missed stumping as it would have dismissed Kumar Sangakkara. It was a faster delivery down the leg side from Jadeja that Sangakkara missed and lost his balance. Dinesh Karthik swung his hand towards the stumps but missed them completely. The left-hander ended up as his team’s batting hero with an 84-ball 103, his 18th hundred in this format. It was a terrific innings under the circumstances. Sangakkara never looked to be in any sort of hurry but still ended up with a strike rate of 122-plus. He had to stay till the end to see his team through as wickets were falling at the other end. And when he got out in the 49th over, Sri Lanka were just seven runs away. India’s young batsman would benefit a lot if they learn a few things from the Sri Lankan. Most of them lacked application. The pitch didn’t offer sharp turn but still eight Indian wickets went down to Sri Lanka’s spinners. Kohli got a very good delivery from Ajantha Mendis — a carrom ball that crashed into the off stump. Actually, Mendis’s inclusion in this game turned out to be a master stroke for Sri Lanka.

Mystery returns
The 27-year-old has always suffered for his inconsistency. But today was a good day for him and he deserved his four wickets. Sachithra Senanayake took three for 41 and left-arm spinner Chaturanga de Silva bagged Ambati Rayudu’s wicket. After a promising start, the latter just threw it away. In fact, Sri Lanka were one bowler short as Mathews limped off after bowling just 3.2 overs. As usual, Lasith Malinga was not menacing against India, taking just one wicket for 58 runs in his 10 overs. But Mendis, with the wickets of Dhawan and Karthik inside three balls in his seventh over, was the game changer. From 175/3 at one stage, India were reduced to 247 for nine before a couple of sixes from Shami gave the total some respectability.
Earlier, Dhawan and Kohli put on 97 runs for the second wicket after an out-of-sorts Rohit Sharma got out cheaply. Dhawan returned to his one-day form after low scores in his last seven innings. But unlike Kohli, he still hasn’t acquired the skill to guide his team till the end.
