Bharat Ratna Demands Continue On Sachin

Following the decision of the government to confer Bharat Ratna on Sachin Tendulkar and Prof CNR Rao, the BJP has revived its demand for conferring the highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna on former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad questioned why Vajpayee was ignored despite being “the most popular PM” ever. He added that “Atalji will get the award once the BJP comes to power at the Centre.

While former prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Morarji Desai, Gulzari Lal Nanda were all given Bharat Ratna, Prasad asked why there was a ’41 year’ delay in conferring the same on Iron Man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.Meanwhile, closer home, TDP chief Chandra Babu Naidu has been making statements that are both interesting and surprising.

What he failed to do during his tenure, Babu is now demanding the Congress government to take appropriate steps to confer Bharat Ratna on late NT Rama Rao. Apart from leaving an indelible mark in cinema and politics, Babu points out that NTR was instrumental in bringing about social change by allowing the backward communities to take active part in politics.
